It wasn’t a holiday; it wasn’t a celebration; it wasn’t a commemoration. It just didn’t exist. </p><p>Why? </p><p>Because the history of slavery was largely silenced. What we did learn was sanitized and trivialized. </p><p>I’m glad that has started to change. I’m glad these histories are being recovered.
