She used to take me to the market to buy things for my dad’s altar, the one day of the year I was allowed to mourn him as a child. She was a poor immigrant in Mexico City who sent her kid to college, a believer in social causes, and a vegetarian for 50 years. She gave a great middle finger. Love you, abuelita.</p>",
