As reported, he bailed out of Stanford 2 days after school started which puts it in August 1995, and the startup didn't have a CEO who wasn't Elon himself (and therefore could petition for his H1B, during which he could stay legally) until 1996, then he most likely overstayed his student visa and worked illegally during that time.</p>",
