"content": "<p>Sharing here my latest contribution to the "Instruments of Surveillance" publication, where I looked at how pervasive surveillance impact trans communities. I also had a chance to be in the same panel with amazing people like Chris, Weniki and of course, Tyne, the brains behind the publication itself. (Shoutout to Tyne!)</p><p>So, my piece critically examines how Automated Gender Recognition technology not only affects trans individuals but also harbours the frightening potential for further weaponisation against them. From airports, to apps, to (soon) bathrooms, weve seen how this form of data extraction and surveillance can be used to target trans people. AUTOMATED GENDER RECOGNITION IS NOT JUST A TRANS ISSUE. This tech is based on the extraction of bodily features. And a seen in the distressing incident involving Imane Khelif, where she faced significant public backlash because bigots deemed her not female enough.</p><p>Surveillance is never neutral. Much so, surveillance of nonconforming identties as they enforce deadly norms and control the diverse expressions of human life. This surveillance does not merely monitor. It actively participates in a broader ecological and social engineering project that seeks to normalise and legitimise certain forms of existence to decide whose lives are worth livable and whose are not.</p><p>Surveillance of trans people, in particular, are profoundly economic and ideological. Trans people challenges gender norms, thus then pose a radical challenge to the socio-economic structures upon which capitalist societies are predicated. These structures rely heavily on binary gender distinctions to organise labour and maintain a division of labour that benefits the status quo.</p>",
