"content": "
This was my first pre-daylight hike - I started up Alum Cave Trail just before 6am to roaring waters and bear country. I was quite intimidated the first 10-15 minutes and sat in the car to get my nerves up before hitting the trail. I had around an hour of darkness with just my headlamp.

I wanted to make it to Myrtle Point for sunrise, but I did not have the motivation to wake up at 2am. I estimated how long it would take to summit quite accurately though - about 3 hours to Myrtle Point.

Total hike roughly 11.5 min/ 3000ft elev gain in 6.5 hours including breaks. For some reason my fastest pace was in pure darkness while I shouted to ward off bears to my presence 😂 The trail follows a river the first mile or so and the water was so loud they would not have heard me.

I eventually passed some other hikers and knew I was the first up when I kept getting spider webs in my face. I had Myrtle Point all to myself - the bushes were not in bloom but I imagine they look lovely when they are.

The way down felt very different as there were many people ascending as I went down. This was a fun way to cap off the trip. I didn’t know what to expect trail condition wise but I found this trail to be fairly easy going compared to the white mountains.

Videos next post
",
