Cole left the country for the U.S. before the book was even published in 1967 (it was immediately banned and he was stripped of his citizenship). He went on to take tens of thousands of photos in New York and the Jim Crow South, but work dried up, and he spent times living on the same streets he had photographed, before dying of pancreatic cancer at 49.
