"name": " 大叔母が亡くなった。もういまは子どもなんてひとりもいなくなった過疎集落出身の母の叔母である星子さんの葬儀には、その集落以外……県外からも、参列者が集まっていた。\n 星子さんは祖母よりも十五年は長く生きた。亡くなる五、六年まえに認知症を発症した星子さんは、ひとり暮らしだった。\n 神戸に嫁いだ星子さんの娘のまき子さんは、高齢で大きな屋敷に住む星子さんを神戸に住まわせる提案を何度もくりかえし、星子さんがこの集落を離れたがらないとわかると村のちかくの施設に入所させられないかと懸命に説得していた。けれど、星子さんは生まれ育ったこの村から出なかった。\n 星子さん、祖母、そして母。――彼女らが生まれたこの村は、いまでこそ過疎集落だが、かつては裕福な村だったそうだ。\n 幼少期から母や祖母は、幾度も在りし日の村の面影をわたしに語った。葬儀の席でも、母は記憶のとめなおしのように語りはじめたのだった。\n「うちには男のひとなんて、ひとりもいなかった。おばあちゃんと、母さん、汐音、女だけの家だった」\n 汐音というのは、母の妹。\n 男らが南洋で巨大な魚群を追い、その魚がいまでは考えられない高値でやりとりされていたころ、村の男らはみな、遠洋漁業船に乗りこんでいた。――遠洋漁業というのは、半年、一年と、船に乗りこんで洋上で魚を釣りつづける仕事だ。当然、夫・父・兄と呼ばれる存在は家に不在。男がいる家、というのは、役場や郵便局、教師、医師……商売屋。それ以外の男は、船を降りた老人と中学生以下の子ども以外、いない村。\n 母はよく、家に酔っ払いのおじいさんがやってきたときの話を聞かせてくれた。酒瓶を片手にもったおじいさんが急に家に押しかけてきて（どうも自分の家と勘違いしていたらしい）怒鳴り散らした。母と小さな妹はパニックで泣きわめき、おじいさんをさらに興奮させてしまった。祖母はおじいさんをうまくあしらい、追い出したそうだが……。あのときは、殺されてしまうかもしれないと思った、と母は何度も何度も語った。六十をすぎたいまでも、夢に見るのよ、と。\n その日の夜は、星子さんの家に泊まったそうだ。こんなとき、男のひとがいないことがどれだけ心細いか……だからお母さんは、毎晩家に帰ってくる男のひとのところに嫁いだのよ。この話をはじめると母はそう話を締めくくった。\n だけど星子さんの葬儀のこの日は、話に続きがあった。\n",
