This was in reaction to Mark Zuckerberg’s recent appearance at Meta Connect, where he proudly displayed a custom made black sweatshirt with the message, in Latin, “Aut Zuck aut nihil” (either Zuck or nothing). The phrase is inspired by Caesar, the Roman emperor, who had once said “aut Caesar aut nihil” (either Cesar or nothing). The sweatshirt and its message made headline news around the world; the Guardian wrote this great piece: “Zuckerberg Augustus: Meta’s emperor rebrands in new clothes”.

After exchanging messages about this with people on the Fediverse (@oblomov@sociale.network in primis, who wrote a great blog post in Italian about this) I would like to put that idea on pause and offer an apology.

@oblomov@sociale.network‘s post made me realize that the phrase is imperialistic and it makes me feel nauseous to associate something dictatorial and authoritarian to the Fediverse. It just feels wrong. Absolutely wrong. In the heat of the moment it had felt like a good idea: a gentle but trollish pushback to the founder of Meta and his brazen ambition for total world domination. But upon further reflection it feels icky to attach such a sentence to the Fediverse.

I’ve been having a great back-and-forth with Oblomov and other Italians in the Fediverse (fun fact: in many Italian high schools you typically study Latin for five years) about alternative, positive phrases in Latin that could promote the Fediverse. My gut feeling right now is to go with something like “the future is federated” or “federation is the future” – inspired by the title of my newsletter about all things Fediverse. As Oblomov smartly remarked, all the best Latin phrases have already been taken (“E Pluribus Unum” by the United States and “Unus Pro Omnibus, Omnes Pro Uno” by Switzerland).

I’d love to hear your ideas and come up with something in Latin, pro Fediverse. Why Latin? Because it still gives me pleasure to be a gentle troll towards a certain imperialistic entrepreneur. And I love wearing my values.

Years ago I had created and sold my own t-shirts and sweatshirts promoting the visibility of female filmmakers; ampersand t-shirts with their names were always great conversation starters. I had also created a line of t-shirts with the message “this is what a film director looks like” or “this is what an entrepreneur looks like” that women bought and proudly wore. This had made me so happy and I’d like to do something similar to promote the Fediverse. The small earnings the t-shirts would make (typically $1-2 per item) could be donated to Fediverse servers I use – I could split them evenly between mastodon.social, pixelfed.social and poliverso.org (the Friendica server I am on).

How would that transform our creativity? This Italian mamma/artist is telling you: you should try it.

Attention readers! This post is for anyone with a creative project. It’s not just for moms. Or for dads. Or for caretakers. If you’re proudly childfree, this applies to you too – carry on reading. I’m sharing some powerful lessons I learned while caring for my 14-month-old baby – which are helping my filmmaking and my photography. Tremendously so. These are pretty universal revelations that hopefully will apply to many of you – whether you’re a budding artist, someone well established in your career or if you have a creative hobby you’re passionate about. I wish I had had these epiphanies 15 years ago.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″ custom_height_tablet=”30″ custom_height_phone=”20″][vc_column_text]

The power of gentle loving kindness

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″ custom_height_tablet=”30″ custom_height_phone=”20″][vc_column_text]A few years ago I came across a quote on Twitter that said something along the lines of: “treat yourself with the same gentle loving kindness you’d treat a newborn baby.” I thought, “Wow! What a powerful concept. I should do this.”

For a while, I would think back to this quote often but to be honest, it was pretty abstract. There were no babies in my extended family or circle of friends and I had no babies of my own back then. So I eventually forgot about it, went about my life and I’m sad to say that most days I didn’t implement this advice.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″ custom_height_tablet=”30″ custom_height_phone=”20″][vc_column_text]

The epiphany

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″ custom_height_tablet=”30″ custom_height_phone=”20″][vc_column_text]Fast-forward to a few years later. I became a mom. And I suddenly remembered this phrase. As the primary caretaker of my baby girl, I am very familiar with the concept of treating my favorite human with gentle loving kindness. It’s been my default setting ever since she was born 14 months ago. I have endless amounts of love and patience when it comes to her. Thing is, in addition to being a mom, I am also a filmmaker and a photographer. And I had a powerful epiphany – thanks to my baby girl – that has transformed the way I create – and how I look back at my old projects.

The realization went like this: what if I were to treat my creative projects with the same gentle loving kindness I treat my baby girl? What if I treated my art the same way I treat my baby? With unconditional love, strong faith and optimism, endless patience and grace? How would my creative life be transformed if I did that?

And that’s when I decided to go Italian mom on my creative projects.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″ custom_height_tablet=”30″ custom_height_phone=”20″][vc_column_text]

Going Italian mom on my art

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″ custom_height_tablet=”30″ custom_height_phone=”20″][vc_column_text]

Step 1: enthusiastic encouragement and optimism early on

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″ custom_height_tablet=”30″ custom_height_phone=”20″][vc_column_text]My daughter has always been a really expressive baby – ever since the day she was born, she would regale us with blissed out smiles.

I have just given my baby girl her dinner, I take her out of her high chair and we go sit on our sofa. I prop her up on my lap and she says “Baby.” Her first English word (she’s being raised trilingual) and her cue for reading Feminist Baby. Well, Neil Postman said this about technology:

Technological change is neither additive nor subtractive. It is ecological. I mean “ecological” in the same sense as the word is used by environmental scientists. One significant change generates total change. If you remove the caterpillars from a given habitat, you are not left with the same environment minus caterpillars: you have a new environment, and you have reconstituted the conditions of survival; the same is true if you add caterpillars to an environment that has had none. This is how the ecology of media works as well. A new technology does not add or subtract something. It changes everything.

Yesterday I had an epiphany. This applies perfectly to the arrival of a baby, too. You don’t have your old professional self plus a baby. EVERYTHING CHANGES.

My baby girl in her playpen

I know that for this new life and new opportunity, I would like to be more assertive. Can you introduce yourself and tell us about the projects/work you’re most proud of?

My name is Rosella Tursi, and I am a documentary editor, although I occasionally dip my toe in the narrative world. I am based in New York City where the documentary film business is flourishing, giving me the opportunity to work on many projects focusing on subjects and messages that I really believe in.

I am really proud of The Last Defense, a documentary series produced by Viola Davis that focused on the wrongful conviction of Julius Jones, a death row inmate in Oklahoma. I edited the second episode of this three-part doc series in 2017-2018, and Julius’ story became more widely known once it aired on ABC, kicking off a torrent of activism on his behalf.

Julius was scheduled for execution in November 2021 and because of the groundswell of support for him, the governor of Oklahoma granted him clemency just hours before he was set to die. Julius has now been moved off death row, and while the fight continues to get him out of prison, he was recently able to hug his mother for the first time in 20 years. That’s something he was not allowed to do when he was on death row. I am so grateful to have been part of the team that brought his story out of the shadows.

More recently, I edited three episodes of the FX documentary series Pride, which chronicles the LGBTQ rights movement across the decades in the United States. As a member of the queer community, this project was a pure labour of love that I mostly edited from home during the pandemic.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”50″ custom_height_tablet=”50″ custom_height_phone=”50″][vc_raw_html]JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwd2lkdGglM0QlMjI1NjAlMjIlMjBoZWlnaHQlM0QlMjIzMTUlMjIlMjBzcmMlM0QlMjJodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy55b3V0dWJlLW5vY29va2llLmNvbSUyRmVtYmVkJTJGU0tfdmx5N0U1M2MlMjIlMjB0aXRsZSUzRCUyMllvdVR1YmUlMjB2aWRlbyUyMHBsYXllciUyMiUyMGZyYW1lYm9yZGVyJTNEJTIyMCUyMiUyMGFsbG93JTNEJTIyYWNjZWxlcm9tZXRlciUzQiUyMGF1dG9wbGF5JTNCJTIwY2xpcGJvYXJkLXdyaXRlJTNCJTIwZW5jcnlwdGVkLW1lZGlhJTNCJTIwZ3lyb3Njb3BlJTNCJTIwcGljdHVyZS1pbi1waWN0dXJlJTIyJTIwYWxsb3dmdWxsc2NyZWVuJTNFJTNDJTJGaWZyYW1lJTNF[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_text]Prior to the pandemic forcing us out of the editing suite, I had been working in person with filmmakers Anthony Caronna and Alex Smith, who co-directed the 1980s episode, and Oscar-nominated director Yance Ford, who directed the 1990s episode. These two episodes of Pride were radically different from each other because the filmmakers had different creative visions, and it made my job exciting as I navigated from the queer underground scene of the 1980s against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic to the culture wars of the 1990s, which set the tone for where we are today politically in the United States.

Switching from in-person work to remote editing was a real challenge at first, by the way. I have spent my career collaborating with directors in the edit suite but never actually had any in-person contact with director Ro Haber, who was behind the 2000s episode of Pride that I edited. But we had long telephone discussions during which I got to understand their creative vision, and we worked really well together.

Somewhere along the way, I fell into a real groove working at home, and the creativity poured out of me in a whole new way. And working on Pride, such a meaningful project, kept me going in the dark, early days of the pandemic when all I heard was ambulance sirens racing up the avenue near my apartment.

Once Pride wrapped, I took on an equally important and gratifying documentary series for HBO with an incredibly talented female director, and I wish I could tell you about it, but I can’t talk about it yet![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

2. What inspired you to become an editor?

I was inspired to become an editor while cutting a Super 8 film in college that I shot myself. Drawing and painting were my primary forms of creative expression at the time, and I had taken a film class on a whim. When I sat down to edit this short film, I got so lost in the process that 14 hours went by without me even realizing it. I still went on to focus on textile art for a while after that until I realized that film was a better medium for me. I’m a perpetual storyteller, and I happen to be good with detailed, focused, repetitive tasks, so editing truly is the best vocation for me.

3. What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don’t be so sensitive when you get notes. Editing is unique in that your whole job entails doing something and then getting critiqued for it over and over and over. It can be emotionally draining when you pour your heart into something and then producers or network executives pick at it. But it is so important to consider the notes you’re being given thoughtfully and that they always point to an area that needs improvement. Every editor gets notes. Film and TV are collaborative efforts, so feedback is essential. At the beginning of my career, I was personally hurt by notes. That is silly. It’s part of the process, and I wish I had developed a thicker skin earlier on.

My other big piece of advice is to do something that inspires you creatively every single day, whether it’s taking a walk while listening to a particular soundtrack on your headphones, reading a book, going to an exhibit, or watching other peoples’ work. There are so many ways to replenish the creative well, and it’s vital to do it every day.

4. Who is the woman in film who inspires you the most? Why?

It’s so hard to choose just one. If I had to pick one, I would have to say Agnès Varda, but there are so many others like Thelma Schoonmaker, Ava DuVernay, Christine Vachon, Lulu Wang, Dee Rees, Céline Sciamma, Alma Har’el and Sally Menke among others.

But you asked me to pick one, and Agnès Varda has always been a consistent inspiration to me. Her approach to filmmaking and her creative spirit are so inspiring. Agnès was so daring and so prolific. I have always been, and will always be, in awe of her magic.

5. What are your favorite films by women directors (or editors) – that you’ve watched recently?

Passing directed by Rebecca Hall and edited by Sabine Hoffman, was a nuanced and delicately-told story about two women with a complex relationship to each other and with their own identities. I was captivated by the story and mesmerized by the beauty of the cinematography and editing.

And while this isn’t a film, I recently watched the sixth episode of the HBO series Insecure’s final season, directed by Natasha Rothwell, who also writes for the show and plays Kelli, and I was blown away. First of all, I LOVE Natasha Rothwell in everything she is in. She literally steals every scene, and I am obsessed with her. The Insecure episode Tired, Okay? was her directorial debut, and she totally killed it. While I love editing and can’t imagine not doing it, I also want to direct, and I was so inspired when I saw her name in the credits as the director of that episode.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

6. What can we do to watch / support your work?

You can watch Pride on Hulu. It’s a six-part documentary. I edited the fourth, fifth and sixth episodes, but you should watch all of them!

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”50″ custom_height_tablet=”50″ Can you introduce yourself and tell us about the projects/work you’re most proud of?

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”50″ custom_height_tablet=”50″ What boggles my mind is that camera companies are missing out on a potential HUGE market – not just when it comes to 50% of the population but also people in a particular life situation. Let me explain.

Capturing My Baby’s Milestones

Since the birth of my daughter in late January 2021, I have taken more than 10,000 photos of her with my professional camera equipment. I also strive to shoot videos of her, if not every day, at least every few days, to capture milestones. The day she came home from the hospital… the first time she met her grandparents… the first time she crawled across the room… you get the idea. So far my husband and I have captured so many moving moments and I’m planning to edit a film for her (it’s my profession after all) so that she can savor these instants too, when she’s older.

My baby girl is now used to my camera and truly fascinated by it. Problem is, when I grab my professional cameras or take out of my pocket my iPhone to film her, she typically freezes and looks at the camera quizzically. She started doing this when she was only 4 months old… Photos are one thing – she smiles with her eyes, too and I have hundreds of stunning photos of her. But filming is something else: it’s as if she has a radar and seems to know when she’s being filmed… and then stops acting naturally.

The smallest high definition camera

As a film director and cinematographer, I possess a large collection of lenses, cameras, gimbals, small drones and other gear to film in any scenario. But this professional equipment is much larger than a phone and more conspicuous. To capture precious moments in the life of my camera-aware baby girl, I’d have to go small. Much smaller.

So last month I started researching products from camera and drone company DJI that fit in the palm of a hand and are much smaller than an iPhone: the DJI Pocket 2 and DJI Action 2.

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″][vc_column_text]

DJI Marketing videos: young people having fun

Both products are showcased in stylish marketing campaigns that show young adults having fun in locations around the world. The tagline for DJI Pocket 2: “create your epic cinematic shot”. Words that come to mind when watching the video are: adventure, travel, fun. There is a quick shot of a baby, but it feels completely out of context in the video. The DJI Action promotional video takes thing up a notch, showing skateboarder, a soccer player, someone riding a motorcycle in the desert, a skydiver… and two young women who seem to be fashion bloggers. You’d have a hard time finding someone over the age of 25 featured in these videos.

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″][vc_raw_html]JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwd2lkdGglM0QlMjI1NjAlMjIlMjBoZWlnaHQlM0QlMjIzMTUlMjIlMjBzcmMlM0QlMjJodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy55b3V0dWJlLmNvbSUyRmVtYmVkJTJGSkxqcEhuSlNwdDQlMjIlMjB0aXRsZSUzRCUyMllvdVR1YmUlMjB2aWRlbyUyMHBsYXllciUyMiUyMGZyYW1lYm9yZGVyJTNEJTIyMCUyMiUyMGFsbG93JTNEJTIyYWNjZWxlcm9tZXRlciUzQiUyMGF1dG9wbGF5JTNCJTIwY2xpcGJvYXJkLXdyaXRlJTNCJTIwZW5jcnlwdGVkLW1lZGlhJTNCJTIwZ3lyb3Njb3BlJTNCJTIwcGljdHVyZS1pbi1waWN0dXJlJTIyJTIwYWxsb3dmdWxsc2NyZWVuJTNFJTNDJTJGaWZyYW1lJTNF[/vc_raw_html][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″][vc_column_text]

I’m sure there is a good reason for it and for a company with more than 1000 employees around the world, I’m certain extensive market research was conducted to find the ideal demographic for its products.

A (forgotten) marketing persona: new parent

After reading mixed reviews for the DJI Action, I took a leap of faith and purchased a DJI Pocket 2. It arrived two weeks ago. I’ve been filming with it ever since and I’m absolutely hooked. I think it’s the ideal product for a new parent and I can’t fathom why DJI won’t target this category in their marketing campaigns.

As a mom and filmmaker, here is what I love about the DJI Pocket 2:

I can turn it on in less than 4 seconds and it’s ready to film. Forget unlocking your phone, opening the camera app and selecting “video”. The DJI Pocket 2 stays on its last used setting, so if you use it to film videos, it’s ready to go at the press of one button

It films in gorgeous 4k resolution

It has a gimbal with 3 axis stabilization, which means that every shot looks smooth and perfectly stabilized. This is possibly my favorite feature – a teeny tiny gimbal on top of a tiny 4k camera the size of a highlighter. Every shot looks AMAZING. As a cinematographer, I can’t stress this enough. A total game changer.

The DJI Pocket has a very wide lens – much wider than that of a smartphone

The other day I used the DJI Pocket 2 to film a POV shot of my baby girl reading a book while sitting in the armchair on my lap. I did a high angle, birds’ eye view shot first and then panned down and around to show her from the front. The entire action was smooth and beautiful to look at. The lens is so wide, that it captured my smiling baby girl and a book, even if I was holding her in my arms. It would be impossible to film this kind of close shot on a phone. Even if you’re Christopher Doyle. With professional camera equipment: forget it. You can’t hold a professional camera in one hand while filming yourself and a baby in your arms. With the DJI Pocket 2 this is not only possible, but beautifully executed because of the combo of gimbal and wide lens.

It’s so small, it can fit in tiny nooks and crannies. Last night my husband was playing with our baby girl, teaching her to reach for objects while sitting on her knees in front of a bookcase. I was able to film an awesome point-of-view shot putting the DJI Pocket 2 inside a nook of the bookcase.

It has FOUR microphones, so the audio quality is stellar.

The DJI Pocket 2 is so small, it fits in my pocket or my purse. I can easily take it with me everywhere

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″][image_with_animation image_url=”7787″ image_size=”full” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text]

Left to right: a Canon 5D Mark IV, the DJI Pocket 2, a highlighter and an iPhone SE

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″][vc_column_text]

Dear DJI, this may be your biggest missed opportunity

My husband and I have been raving about the DJI Pocket 2. We’ve been demonstrating its awesomeness to anyone who visits us at our apartment. We may have convinced 3 couples and another friend to buy it.

My biggest problem these days is the sheer amount of videos I’m filming. Someone – i.e. me – gotta edit these one day. 2 videos a day may not seem much, but they translate to roughly 4 minutes of footage per day… In addition to the photos I’m taking. I’m getting a surge of stress just thinking about it. Thank goodness I have a 12 terabyte hard drive to store them.

I don’t feel comfortable sharing online videos that show my baby girl’s face – I want to protect her privacy as much as I can for the time being – so you have to take my word for it. This camera is AMAZING. Especially in natural light, in the daytime. A tiny gimbal on a 4k camera the size of a highlighter. What boggles my mind is that camera companies are missing out on a potential HUGE market – not just when it comes to 50% of the population but also people in a particular life situation.
