"content": "<p>It's fascinating watching the rush of attempts to monetize and control the fediverse by many of capitalism's worst actors (there's the obvious one of Musk buying Twitter but it's the frenzy around Mastodon/the fediverse that's truly fascinating, if somewhat disgusting, to watch). </p><p>It's partly fascinating for what it reveals about those who can't even imagine people simply doing things for other people because we're enjoying peopling together. </p><p>I suspect they're terrified that even more of us will discover we don't really need corporations to have fun and to entertain ourselves and that, if we talk too much among ourselves somewhere they can't automate monitoring and dividing us, we might decide we care about each other and the planet far more than we care about corporations and rich people. Hell, we might just buy each other's art directly and stuff (people make things, corporations serve as middlemen between creators and audiences).</p><p>Musk bought Twitter because people were repurposing the master's tools to dismantle the master's house (making White people aware of police violence and <a href=\"https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BLM\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>BLM</span></a>, building support for <a href=\"https://eldritch.cafe/tags/unions\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>unions</span></a>, <a href=\"https://eldritch.cafe/tags/metoo\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>metoo</span></a>, <a href=\"https://eldritch.cafe/tags/transrights\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>transrights</span></a> and others I'm doubtless forgetting in this moment).</p><p>What makes Mastodon different is that we can build our own meeting halls here and make our own tools and burn down the master's house. We can take back the means of production (that doesn't mean we all need to run our own servers). And we can start building a house, or many houses and villages, that suit and serve our own purposes. And the skills we all learn talking and working together here, cooperating and listening and dancing and even snarking (sharp tongues are also weapons!), are ones we can take into the physical world to build better communities too.</p>",
