In fact, I could see its being extremely useful for something I want to do a lot more: writing. My meditation teacher, Dr. Chris Chroniak, told me a long time ago, that the key to success in journaling is consistency. That was several years ago.

I wasn't ready to journal then. I think I really needed to be ready to start the whole process. I couldn't really think in terms of any consistency, because I couldn't even get started. Therefore, there was really nothing to be consistent about. In fact, in my situation as a non-starter, being consistent was really being consistent about not journaling. Of course that's not what Chris meant, and it's not the key to success that many others have found through writing down various thoughts daily. So, I have concluded that I just wasn't ready to do it.

Various experiences arrive in our lives at different times, and under different circumstances. Each individual is a collection of experiences and thoughts and dreams and hopes and joys and sorrows, so we really need to honor that, and not try to force journaling on anyone or emphasize it to them too much.

No one did that with me. I felt that I was just one of those people who was born incapable of keeping a journal. Obviously, that's a rather silly thought. But it's how I looked at the situation. I bifurcated humanity into two groups: those who could journal, and those who could not. For a long time I placed myself in the latter group. That's really something of a paradox in my life, because when I was in 9th and 10th grades, I kept a journal very regularly. It was a handwritten journal that I kept in a notebook. I updated it almost every day. I got away from that practice. Anyhow, the bottom line is now I'm back to doing journalingi.

I'm using an app called Day One which seems to be suiting me very well. I've got a solid group of men surrounding me who have said that journaling has made a big difference in their lives. So, I'm giving it a try and hoping that it's going to yield good results. Wish me luck.
