All these flashbacks are often accompanied by a whole bunch of names and places when I&#39;m still trying to figure out who the protagonist is. </p><p>I find this makes a story really drag, and makes me struggle as a reader until I want to throw in the towel. </p><p>Sometimes it doesn&#39;t come back to present tense for chapters and chapters, and then when it does, it&#39;s in a different setting than the beginning of the story. </p><p>My suggestion is to avoid this sort of scenario, at least at the onset of a story. Let people become acquainted with a small group of characters before throwing in a whole pile of other characters. </p><p>There are exceptions to everything, of course.
