It was a plain massacre. </p><p>Further reading seems to indicate that the fighters, especially the low-rank army commanders, felt guilt about their part in this atrocity and offered the choice part of their loot (the ladies&#39; jewelry) to the Holy Sanctuary&#39;s Treasury.</p><p>However, at a casual glance at the Classical Commentators of this chapter I noticed none of them sharing this interpretation. They offer other explanations for the Atonement offer.
