What is the mask and what is us. Masking is, in a sense, lying, or playing a role, like an actor, but on the stage of life. Some of us, became adept at taking parts of ourselves to form that role. Exaggerating and shaping those parts, to form the essence of the role we were playing. So, in a sense, it is still us, but not really us and yet in so many ways, it made it easier to establish and maintain the mask and to benefit from the functionality of it.

But, however you look at it, masking is lying and we know that it is lying and therein lies the damage and cost. Not just in the extraordinary effort and energy required to maintain it, but in the damage to our esteem and sense of self. Because, in the end, it is never us the world sees, or praises, or rewards. It is only ever the value of the mask that is judged and not us, hiding behind it and in our heart of hearts, we know this and suffer because of it.

This is why unmasking is so often recommended. But, this is always somewhat like asking someone to live in a foreign country and to not speak, or even attempt to speak, that country's language. It makes living so much harder and in some respects riskier. This is especially true in professional settings, where speaking the right "language" (by which I obviously mean, being professional, observing the appropriate boundaries and ways of communicating) is not only expected, but often a requirement of doing the job.

So, in terms of your situation. I would say it comes down to this. Could you unmask completely, assuming that's possible, and still stay in that situation? Could you unmask partially, or to different degrees in different areas, and still be able to stay? Or, is neither possible to be able to stay and in which case, are there any situations where it could be?
",
