On a lower plane, this terrace is continued by a formal garden that ends ahead on a hedge of a strip of trees.
As soon as Patricia and John arrived, we all climbed the steps leading to the platform in front of the main door and rang the bell. A butler (really!) opened, took our overcoats and the ladies’ fur coats, and hung them on a great hanger. Then led us to a living room (literally) full of Chippendale furniture (or similar - I know very little of furniture styles), and the walls (literally) covered with paintings and tapestries. …
Marianne wore a gorgeous, half-sleeved, Christmas party dress, skirt well above her knees, made in a golden brown fabric that moved with her body (I don’t know how to describe it better), with spiral silver sequin bands. …
After fifteen minutes, Marianne’s father appeared on a wheelchair pushed by a woman of about thirty-five. …
…
Bernard made a gesture calling the butler, repeated the gesture for the man to get down and whispered something. The butler answered yes, audibly.
“Well, it looks like everything’s ready for dinner. Let us not delay it, because I want the staff to get out before 10:00 p.m. so they can get their own Christmas supper.”
The dining room was huge. In fact, the ceiling was divided into three domes, painted with mythological scenes of the Greek goddesses Demeter (the goddess of fertility and harvests), Hestia (the goddess of the Earth and of domestic life), and Artemis (the goddess of hunting and forests). The large table in the middle seemed small, … One of the longest walls was almost all occupied with tall windows that gave access to a large terrace with a pool.
… In front of the leftmost window was a large Christmas tree, profusely decorated but no lights flashing - fortunately.
No one led us to our place at the table, so we realized that we should stand for the appetizers. And they came in trays brought by the maids. First appeared small slices of toasted baguette covered with pear (which looked like pear in syrup) and a cheese cream. I asked Marianne what that was and she explained to me that they called it ‘Giada’s Grappa-Poached Pear Crostini’, and that it was pear stewed in the oven in ‘grappa’ (a very strong Italian brandy), water and orange juice, with rosemary. The spread cream was made with ‘ricotta’ cheese, agave syrup, lemon juice, olive oil and salt.
