We already had three cats, but we took this poor scrap in and gave it a bath and trimmed its butt fur. My mum said it was a boy, and I named him Archie. I can’t remember how much later it was, but Archie had a horrible accident and was rushed to the emergency vet to have his hind leg amputated. The vet rang us with the unexpected news that Archie was a girl, and expecting kittens! Archie became Jemima.</p><p>Jemima was… not all there. I think either a developmental thing or acquired brain injury. She wasn’t too particular about where she did her business. One time we had visitors and were all sitting around the living room fire when she hopped (she got around really well on three legs) into the middle and did a runny poo right on the hearth rug. Another time she peed on my dad’s desk and his papers were floating about.</p><p>A little girl or two or three called Melanie lived on our street, she and Jemima loved each other. She would come to our driveway calling, “Mima! Mima!” and Jemima would come out to be petted and wee with delight.</p><p>She was a little demented but the friendliest cat. I remember a man came to fit a carpet and we had to protect him from her insistent love. One of the most characterful cats we ever had, and we had many over the years.</p>",
