"content": "<p>We were going to head over to a really nice beach/national park today but Kid1 had a headache and I had a case of the mehs. So we decided we'd go another day and stayed at home instead, and it was... great, actually?</p><p>Kid1 went back to bed and got up again some hours later, in a vastly better mood; I cleaned the study and the laundry; Kid2, Kid3 and I went to the shop where I picked up a bargain reduced 3-pack of zucchinis for less than a dollar, can you believe it?! Also, <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/HappyNewYear\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>HappyNewYear</span></a> 😊 </p><p>I'm an <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/editor\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>editor</span></a> working full-time from home for a small publication. The organisation has gone through a lot of changes over the past six months, which have been stressful, but hopefully things will be more stable this year. </p><p>#2024 will also be the year I finish my <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/PhD\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>PhD</span></a>. I know I said that last year but I've run out of time so I really have to do it now. It's a <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/creative\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>creative</span></a> PhD -- I'm writing a <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/steampunk\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>steampunk</span></a> novel set in <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/WesternAustralia\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>WesternAustralia</span></a> and my <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/thesis\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>thesis</span></a> discusses Australian steampunk. Weirdly, despite having spent years on this, I still like the topic and I hope to write some more papers on specific elements when I'm finished. (But first I need to finish). </p><p>I have a partner and four <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/children\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>children</span></a> and live with them plus two <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/dogs\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>dogs</span></a>, three <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/cats\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>cats</span></a> and a bunch of <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/chooks\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>chooks</span></a> (aka <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/chickens\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>chickens</span></a>) in a little regional city on the south coast of Western Australia. I love <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/cooking\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>cooking</span></a>, <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/reading\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>reading</span></a>, <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/writing\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>writing</span></a>, <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/gardening\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>gardening</span></a> and <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/hiking\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>hiking</span></a> and am interested in all things <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/green\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>green</span></a> ... I've been banging on about the <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/environment\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>environment</span></a> for decades and despite the dire predicament we humans collectively find ourselves in now, I'm heartened by the fact that <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/climate\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>climate</span></a> issues are mainstream news now. I believe in <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/hope\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>hope</span></a> because I think it's a radical act of defiance against the <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/doom\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>doom</span></a>.</p><p>I'm fascinated by <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/science\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>science</span></a> and <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/space\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>space</span></a> and the <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/history\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>history</span></a> of how humans have learnt and passed down <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/knowledge\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>knowledge</span></a> through millennia. I love to learn new things from people whose backgrounds are different from my own. I spent a little time in Germany and did languages in my undergrad degree, so ich spreche <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/deutsch\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>deutsch</span></a> et parle un peu <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/fran%C3%A7ais\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>français</span></a>. I'm also learning <a href=\"https://aus.social/tags/Japanese\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>Japanese</span></a> on Duolingo so now I can say 'this cake is tasty', which, I think we can all agree, is a very handy phrase to know. </p><p>Ooh!
