Be 'worth' a follow back. A user pic, bio, some links if relevant, an #introduction post. (Here's mine https://bit.ly/3EgqwhH)

2) It's like the early web here. With no big cash injections (as intended), this is a volunteer and donations-driven effort. All its code, server space and speed, all of its moderation. That last point is a good thing, though: moderators here can be reached for help.

3) There are 12k+ 'instances' to join, but no matter which you join, you can follow & chat with everyone else. It's like being in Australia & chatting with the US. Instance admins can also 'defederate' from others – block entire instances if they're full of bad actors. That's a good thing.

4) There are no DMs and no 'Quote tweets' – Mastodon's founder and many devs/admins feel the potential for QT-driven abuse is a bigger concern than the benefits QTs might offer. I disagree, and many new people seem to also disagree, but them's the breaks. (There are workarounds, but I'm not teaching you!)

5) The official app is good but not great, but you can install the web 'app' (a 'PWA') to your phone, and there are third-party apps too.

6) There's not much 'going viral' here, but use hashtags and you'll be found! (And you'll find others.)

Welcome!

#TwitterMigration
",
