This was the return trip, and he remembered an abandoned house was near by, so he decided to hole up in the ruins for the night.<br />When he reached the house, it was not the ruins he remembered, but a dignified farm house. From outside, he could barely make out the light of a single candle within.<br />Upon entering the building, he found the candle lit a table set with meals for two. The first plate setting was a simple shepherd&#39;s pie upon a plate of silver, with a silver stein of hot ale. The second place setting was a golden plate with only a large, dead rat upon it.<br />It was then the man noticed that he was not alone. Beyond the rat plate, glowing red feline eyes opened. There stood a black cat, erected on its hind legs, standing well taller than his human guest.<br />&quot;Would you care to join me for supper?&quot;, the cat enquired.<br />Startled, the man bumped the table with such force that the single candle fell over, igniting the table&#39;s cloth.<br />The cat jumped into the air, and the man ran out of the house. After crossing the threshold, he stumbled. Looking back, he found only the ruins behind him.<br />Reaching the village, he shared his story with the innkeeper.
